- The one-off cost of a four-year warranty (which can have a cooling-off period of just 14-28 days from point of purchase) can be as high as 50% of the cost of the item itself.
- Extended Warranties account for nearly 30% of the annual profits for some electrical retailers.
- Policies sold at the till are subject to a Treasury boosting 17.5% Insurance Premium Tax. Cover bought from alternative suppliers is only subject to a 5% tax levy.
- Some electrical goods are simply not worth taking extra cover on - despite the overtures of the retailer. However, a washing machine will need repairing three times on average during its 8-10 year life span. That's when cover is worth it.
